Plumbing is one of the few trades where the most important work disappears the moment it is finished. A sewer main is buried six feet down, a water service runs under a driveway, a shower valve sits inside a wall behind tile. Once the trench is backfilled and the wall is closed, a homeowner has no practical way to judge whether the pipe was bedded correctly, whether the pitch was set to grade, or whether the fittings were the right material for the job. That is exactly why we photograph our work as we go.

The images on this page were taken on ProStream Plumbing job sites in and around Baltimore. They are not renderings, and they are not licensed from a photo library. Each one shows a stage of an actual repair or installation — the failure we found, the work in progress, and the finished result after restoration. When we quote a sewer main replacement in Towson or a water service in Glen Burnie, this is the standard of workmanship the price reflects.

What to Look For in These Photos

A few details separate work that lasts from work that comes back. In the excavation photos, notice that new PVC sits on clean stone rather than the spoil that came out of the trench: bedding material is what keeps a line holding pitch after the soil settles. In the water main images, notice that isolation valves and pressure reducing valves are grouped where a person can actually reach them, because a shutoff you cannot get to during a leak is not really a shutoff. In the mechanical rooms, notice that the piping is supported and labeled instead of strapped wherever it happened to land.

The rough-in photos matter for a different reason. Drain, waste and vent piping has to be laid out before anything is covered, and once drywall goes up, a missed vent or a flat run of drain line becomes an expensive demolition project. Those pictures are taken at inspection stage, which is the only honest time to show them.

Before and After, Side by Side

Several sets below are matched pairs. Corroded galvanized branch lines next to the copper that replaced them. A utility sink holding stagnant water next to the same sink draining clear. A rusted toilet flange leaking into a subfloor next to a new PVC flange anchored to solid wood. A cleanout riser sitting in an open trench next to the finished brass plug set flush in an asphalt patch you can drive over the next day.

The restoration photos are deliberately included. Plenty of contractors will replace a pipe and leave the yard, driveway or basement floor as a problem for someone else to solve. Backfill, compaction, concrete patching and asphalt repair are part of the job on every underground project we take on, so they belong in the gallery alongside the pipework.

Every Photo Is Local Work

Maryland plumbing has its own particular problems. Baltimore rowhomes have galvanized supply lines and clay sewer laterals well past their service life. Anne Arundel County sits on a high water table where a sump pump is basic protection rather than an upgrade. Newer construction in Hanover, Odenton and Columbia brings the opposite work: clean rough-ins where the goal is to pass inspection the first time. All of it is represented here, because all of it is work we do week to week.

If you see a job that looks like yours, call (443) 949-5878 and describe what is happening. A licensed master plumber will tell you what it likely is, what it typically takes to fix, and what it does not need — before anyone comes out.
